AMD has finally launched the first of its high performance mobile GPUs with the arrival of the HD 7970M.  The HD 7970M is based on the current latest generation 28nm GPU process and in terms of its specifications it boasts almost identical ones to the HD 7870, which is roughly the same in performance as a GTX 580 but without the hefty power draw.

Specifications:

  • 1280 GCN Cores
  • 80 TMUs
  • 32 ROPs
  • 256 bit interface
  • 2GB GDDR5
  • 850MHz Core
  • 1200MHz (4.8GHz) effective memory
  • 153.6 GB/s bandwidth
  • ZeroCore technology, less than 1W when idle

AMD is claiming a whole host of design wins with its HD 7970M and we should see it available from notebook vendors from today.
