Chrome overtakes Firefox in the UK

Chrome is a newcomer to the browser market relative to Internet Explorer and FireFox, it only arrived in late 2008. Yet as of July 2011 Chrome had overtaken FireFox in UK popularity and is fast approaching Internet Explorer which has a significant lead over both of its competitors. Chrome also overtook Firefox in Ireland back in May to now hold second place in the UK and Ireland.

Since 2009 Chrome has gained 18.2% in the browser market in the UK whilst Internet Explorer has lost around 15% and FireFox stayed pretty much the same. Both FireFox and Chrome are continuing to take away market share from Internet Explorer as well as each other. The CEO of StatCounter Aodhan Cullen had this to say about the figures released:

“Chrome continues to make significant gains in the browser market going from under 4 percent two years ago to over 20 percent today, despite falling market share Internet Explorer still leads in the browser war but the next few months will be interesting to watch with Chrome and Firefox almost neck and neck.”
