EKWB Announces AM4 Monoblock for ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero Motherboard

EKWB has announced their very first monoblock for AMD’s AM4 Ryzen line, specifically fitted for ASUS’ Republic of Gamers Crosshair VI Hero X370 motherboard. Since it is a monoblock, it covers the CPU as well as the VRM of the motherboard with a single piece. This EKWB monoblock is based on the award-winning EK-Supremacy EVO cooling engine like the previously released EKWB monoblocks for Intel Z270 motherboards.

EKWB Announces AM4 Monoblock for ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero Motherboard

Aside from providing an option to liquid cool their new AMD Ryzen system, the EK-FB ASUS C6H RGB monoblock has an integrated 4-pin RGB LED strip which makes it compatible with ASUS Aura Sync RGB LED customization. This RGB LED strip is right across the bottom area and backlits the Crosshair Logo.

EKWB Announces AM4 Monoblock for ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero Motherboard

This monoblock fits directly due to its integrated mounting system for LGA-1151 sockets, only requiring the user to remove the stock VRM heatsinks on the Crosshair VI Hero first. Since it is designed specifically for the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero X370 motherboard layout, there are no clearance or compatibility issues with the fit and the single block cools the CPU and the MOSFETs at the same time. The cold-plate itself has been redesigned to ensure proper contact with AMD’s Ryzen integrated heatspreader. The base of the monoblock is made of nickel-plated electrolytic copper while the top is made out of acrylic glass material.

It is now available directly via the EK Webshop and retails for 119.95€ including VAT. To check out what features are available on the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero motherboard, check out the review here at eTeknix where it earned an Editor’s Choice Award.

Wax Worm Caterpillars Could Solve the World's Plastic Waste Problem

The wax worm catterpillar, the larvae of the common insect Galleria mellonella is commercially bred as fishing bait. It is also a scourge in Europe, living as parasites inside beehive colonies. A recent chance discovery however, has changed how scientists view these humble creatures. An amateur beekeeper from the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria (CSIC), Spain named Federica Bertocchini made the discovery while she was removing the wax worm from her honeycomb hives. She placed the creatures temporarily inside a typical shopping bag and noticed that it became riddled with holes. She then collaborated with her colleagues Paolo Bombelli and Christopher Howe at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Biochemistry to conduct an experiment.

In their research, they have found holes appearing in plastic supermarket bags within just 40 minutes and after 12 hours, the plastic mass was reduced by as much as 92 mg. The calculated rate of biodgredation using wax worms is even faster than the plastic-eating bacteria announced last year which had a rate of 0.13 mg a day.

“We are planning to implement this finding into a viable way to get rid of plastic waste, working towards a solution to save our oceans, rivers, and all the environment from the unavoidable consequences of plastic accumulation,” said Dr Bertocchini. “However, we should not feel justified to dump polyethylene deliberately in our environment just because we now know how to bio-degrade it.”  The researchers have applied for patents to the discovery and will be conducting more research to pin-point the chemical secrets involved in the natural degradation of plastic.

Two years ago, mealworms were discovered to be excellent natural biodegrading agents for polystyrene, and were discovered to gobble up up to 39 mg a day per 100 worms.

Spotify Music Streaming Service Looking to Create Their Own Hardware

Following popular social media sharing website Snapchat’s lead with the release of their own Spectacles hardware tied to their own platform, it appears that streaming music service Spotify is also looking to build a mobile device and venture into hardware wearables. Spotify is looking for a Senior Hardware Product manager with the intention to create “a category defining product akin to Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo and Snap Spectacles”. The job description was posted on Spotify’s Career Opportunities section on their website and lists the job as a position looking to be filled in Stockholm, Sweden. Although not much information is available yet, the job listing describes the project as a “fully-connected hardware device”.

Spotify Music Streaming Service Looking to Create Their Own HardwareThe work expectations for this job listing includes:

  • Deeply understand Spotify’s mission and strategies, manage product vision for the cross-functional team, set qualitative objectives and quantitative goals.
  • Partner with hardware initiative program managers to build products that can become new Spotify business lines.
  • Drive product development with a team of world-class engineers and designers.
  • Work directly with suppliers and manufacturers to specify and ensure timely delivery of hardware that supports and integrates Spotify’s software stack.
  • Integrate exploratory user research, usability studies, and market analysis into product requirements to improve user satisfaction.
  • Define, monitor and analyze metrics for launched products and feed findings back into product development process.
  • Clearly communicate product plans, benefits and results, as appropriate, to a wide range of audiences, from internal partners to all Spotify employees.
  • Drive Spotify’s invention and innovation success from a hardware perspective.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other areas of the business, including business development, legal, comms, and marketing to ensure product releases maximise impact.
  • Manage end of product life cycle, whether decisions require reinvestment, transitioning to maintenance or product retirement.
  • Work from our office in Stockholm, Sweden.

The listings also suggest that the upcoming product will have voice capabilities and describes the project manager as having to work specifically with a team dedicated to this feature. The job listings also show that the company is looking for product directors whose work will focus on “natural language understanding” which specifically is for their conversational interface. This is where the Amazon Echo reference comes in; with the upcoming Spotify device responsive to voice commands and/or could indicate tighter integration with existing voice command platforms.

Overwatch Pro Fired After Racial Tirade During Scrimmage (VIDEO)

Matt “Dellor” Vaughn, a 28-year old professional Overwatch player from Sacramento, California playing for Toronto Esports was quickly fired citing breach of contract after he was recorded during a scrimmage in a racial tirade shouting into the microphone for 25 uninterrupted seconds. Before Vaughn launched into meltdown mode, he was getting owned repeatedly by a player using Widowmaker which he believed was cheating. You can hear Vaughn’s ranting in the minute-long video below. *WARNING* the following video contains racially insensitive words and may offend some viewers. It is presented here in its entirety for transparency. The video was uploaded by Odd Washington from YouTube:

Toronto Esports posted the following statement from president Ryan Pallett immediately on their website on Sunday:

Toronto Esports is an organization built on inclusivity, and we have always had a zero- tolerance policy for any forms of discrimination. Immediately upon learning of the incident, the player was interviewed, admitted to the offence, and was notified that his contract with the organization was being terminated

Dellor has since then apologized on his Twitter account, although not exactly showing much maturity with his choice of words after the incident:

I fucked up and deserve to be dropped from Toronto Esports, I won’t try to argue or make an excuse, I don’t have any. I just want people to know what happened. I was having a really bad day. Didn’t get much sleep, twitch wouldn’t work for 2 hours after I woke up, and once it finally did, my internet was lagging. So I was pretty upset from the moment I woke up.

Then I get into a game against a widowmaker who is blatantly cheating. Everything was whatever, I’ve dealt with cheaters before, but when him and his entire team, and MY entire team start talking shit, it gets to me. I snapped. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I have anger problems.

The only thing I can say is that despite me using that word, I am not a racist. I was extremely upset, and I was trying to make the person I was angry with upset as well, and so I said the most offensive thing that came to mind.

I fucked up, I have no excuse. Toronto Esports is a great organization and I am sorry to them for tarnishing their name. I’ve put my entire life into gaming/esports and this has been a massive wake up call.

Intel Optane Memory Accelerator Now On Sale

Intel announced the lower-cost variant of its fresh new Optane Memory technology last month, promising a significant performance boost that is a lot more affordable than the DC P4800X SSD (which costs $1520 USD for the 375GB model). The new Optane Memory accelerator is available in 16GB or 32GB single-sided M.2 2280 form factor drives. Although you can order it starting today, it does not actually ship out until April 29, but at least Intel kept the promise of a low price with the 16GB model MEMPEK1W016GAXT starting at only $45. Amazon.com does not list the price for the 32GB model but it is expected to fetch for $77 USD.

Intel Optane Memory Accelerator Now On Sale

In terms of performance, the reviews came out today many are impressed with Intel actually disrupting the SSD market with their new Optane drives. Paired with a larger capacity mechanical drive, the Intel Optane accelerator works wonders, putting up 1.4GB/s data transfer, as well as at 204MB/s low 4K read performance. The biggest downside of course is that it is only compatible with a narrow set of systems, specifically only those on the latest generation Intel platform. This means any Intel user with a 100-series based chipset is out of luck, and even if a user is on a 200-series platform, if they have a Kaby Lake Pentium processor or lower, they will not be able to take advantage of this accelerator feature. Which is too bad because those on lower-end systems who can’t afford faster processors will benefit the most from this latest Intel SSD.

You can check Intel’s Optane Memory website for a list of compatible components: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/optane-memory.html

Benchmarks for the Intel Core i7-7740K Kaby Lake-X CPU surfaced on the SiSoft Sandra Benchmark database last month using an ASRock X299 Gaming Professional motherboard, but now another one has popped up using a Gigabyte X299 Gaming 3. The X299 chipset is a high-end desktop platform believed to be using a new LGA2066 socket. Based on the information also leaked by BenchLife.info last month, Kaby Lake-X CPUs are quad-core processors equipped with an 8MB cache and has 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0 from the CPU which can be configured as a singular 16x or a 1×8+2×4. Unlike its current mainstream desktop Kaby Lake counter-part, the Intel Kaby Lake-X CPUs will not have integrated graphics but will have quad-channel DDR4 support.

Intel Core i7-7740K CPU on Gigabyte X299 Chipset Motherboard Benchmarks Surface

Intel Core i7-7740K CPU on Gigabyte X299 Chipset Motherboard Benchmarks Surface

From the SiSoft Sandra Benchmark, it shows the Intel Core i7-7740K running at 4.2GHz with a 4.5GHz Turbo. This is also the first time the Intel HEDT platform extends down to offering quad-core eight-threaded processors, options which they only used for the mainstream desktop line previously. In fact the entire X-series family of processors will have a wide range of various core-configurations from 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-core processors, all on the new X299 motherboard line. At the same time, Intel will also have a Skylake-X CPU which will also be built on the 14nm process but is expected to be for the top-end 12-core/24-thread line with 44 lanes of PCIe Gen 3.

Various information on Intel Coffee Lake CPUs are also coming to light, just a few hours ago more SiSoft Sandra benchmarks show its performance. It is expected that these CPUs will go on Z370 chipset motherboards for Intel’s next generation mainstream desktop platform which will bring about built-in chipset Wi-Fi and native USB 3.1 Gen2 support. The aggressive CPU blitz and moving of the timetable forward can be seen as a counter-offensive move against AMD’s Ryzen which has managed to dominate much of the talk online about processors for the good part of the year so far. It is expected that AMD will also be planning their own answer to Intel’s HEDT line and will feature a 16-core/32-threaded monster on a new socket design.

Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma Believes Robots Could be CEOs Within 30 Years

Speaking at a China Entrepreneur Club event, Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma addressed the upcoming workplace disruption that will be brought about by robots and the advancement of artificial intelligence. Ma spoke of the world experiencing more pain than happiness within the next 30 years due to this disruption if humans do not adapt and learn to work with machines. This includes not just education reform now but also social conflicts that need to be addressed.

Ma further warned that he gave hundreds of speeches over 15 years ago about the disruption e-commerce and the internet was going to bring to traditional business models but nobody listened. Businesses that have not adapted and are not connected to the internet eventually failed. Now that Ma has led Alibaba to unprecedented success, many are willing to listen.

“30 years later, the Time Magazine cover for the best CEO of the year very likely will be a robot. It remembers better than you, it counts faster than you, and it won’t be angry with competitors,” said Ma. Machines should not replace what humans can do according to him, but we have also have to accept our limitations and use robots as tools to do the tasks that the human brain can’t do better such as processing large amounts of data. With the upcoming job disruption, humans need to accept that robots will outperform them in almost every aspect and efforts must be made so that they become a “partner” for us, rather than a competitor in the industry.

Lawsuit Alleges Bose Headphones Spy on Users

According to a lawsuit – proposed as a class-action – filed in Illinois last week, high-end audio equipment manufacturer Bose is spying on its customers and selling data regarding their listening habits without permission. The plaintiff, Kyle Zak, reports that he discovered his $350 wireless Bose headphones were, though the connected Bose Connect app, sending information regarding the music and audio that he was listening to, tagged with the product’s serial number which, after being registered with the company, was associated with his name and contact information (personally identifiable information).

The filing (via The Washington Post) reads:

“Defendant programmed its Bose Connect app to continuously record the contents of the electronic communications that users send to their Bose Wireless Products from their smartphones, including the names of the music and audio tracks they select to play along with the corresponding artist and album information, together with the Bose Wireless Product’s serial numbers (collectively, “Media Information”).”

Bose issued the following statement after the lawsuit was filed on 20th April, denying the allegations and vowing to fight them in court:

“We understand the nature of Class Action lawsuits. And we’ll fight the inflammatory, misleading allegations made against us through the legal system.

For now, we want to talk directly to you.

Nothing is more important to us than your trust. We work tirelessly to earn and keep it, and have for over 50 years. That’s never changed, and never will. In the Bose Connect App, we don’t wiretap your communications, we don’t sell your information, and we don’t use anything we collect to identify you – or anyone else – by name.

If there’s anything else we think you should know, you’ll hear it straight from us.”

Yesterday (23rd April), Bose issued a follow-up statement, claiming that the company’s privacy policy was also being misrepresented in the media:

“We told you you’d hear things straight from us. We’ve answered your questions when they’ve come in, but when news stories repeat misleading information from a class action lawsuit, we have to repeat our response to clarify. So we’re going to share with everyone what we’ve shared with those of you who’ve contacted us directly, and what we’ve shared more broadly to correct the record.

First, our privacy policy can be found on the Connect App. You’ll find that the Connect App collects standard things to make your experience, and our products, better — like device information, app performance, and app and product usage. That includes information about songs playing on the device, volume played, and other usage data.

But you have to be using the Connect App with your Bose product for that to happen. You can use every Bose Bluetooth product without the Connect App.

For as long as we’re hearing from you, you’ll keep hearing from us. And we’ll keep posting additional information that you haven’t asked us about, too.”

Bose products that use the Bose Connect app are listed as:

  • QuietComfort 35
  • SoundSport Wireless
  • Sound Sport Pulse Wireless
  • QuietControl 30
  • SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphones II
  • SoundLink Color II

IMAX VR Arcade is a Huge Success

IMAX, the company behind the eponymous 70mm film standard and related cinema projection system, has revealed that its virtual reality arcade in Los Angeles has been a massive hit and that it plans to open further facilities across the world.

“Our LA [VR] facility, which has been opened for roughly 3 months now, has seen over 20,000 unique visitors,” revealed IMAX CEO Richard Lewis Gelfond during a recent earnings call for investors. “From a revenue standpoint, the center is pacing at roughly $15,000 a week over the last month or so, including our highest grossing week to date, this past week, and continues to exceed expectations.”

The arcade has been so successful, in fact, that IMAX plans to open more arcades in the US, the UK, and China as a prelude to a full global rollout.

“We plan to open additional pilot VR centers in New York, Shanghai, Tokyo and Manchester in the U.K., and will continue to use these sites as pilots to ultimately determine the longer-term opportunity at hand, but we’re definitely encouraged by the initial results from our LA facility,” Gelfond explained.

“Ultimately, we believe the success of this venture will be driven largely by the quality of content that we’re able to deliver to consumers,” the CEO added. “And on that front, we’ve taken significant first steps to curating and delivering new and engaging content to our centers.”

IMAX hopes that partnerships with Hollywood studios will see more crossover content from popular film franchises, which will debut at its VR centres before being released to home VR customers.

“As many of you probably saw, we signed our first new content deal with Warner Bros., which we hope to capitalize through our virtual reality content fund, which is expected to produce roughly 25 pieces of content,” Gelfond said. “This deal facilitates the release of 3 unique piece of brand-new VR content, including Justice League and Aquaman. Similar to theatrical windows, this content will have an exclusive window at IMAX VR centers prior to being launched more broadly in-home where it’ll also generate revenue given our stake in the content. We anticipate a number of deals similar to this one advancing through the pipeline in coming months. So please stay tuned.”

New IMAX VR arcades are expected to pop up over the next two years.

It’s no secret that Starcraft is still incredibly popular in South Korea, so popular in fact that one particular politician has decided to use a series of Starcraft maps for his campaign. We’re talking about presidential candidate Moon Jae-in, whose team had the clever idea of launching two free maps on his campaign blog. If you’re not familiar with Moon Jae-in, you should know that he’s actually a legitimate candidate, and it’s likely that these Starcraft maps will help him appeal to the country’s youth. However, it’s worth pointing out that the maps weren’t designed by scratch but merely modified in order to spell out “1 Moon Jae-In” using minerals.

The message appears in the center of the map, and it probably symbolizes prosperity or something similar, which is a recurring theme in many political campaigns. We’ll just have to wait and see how South Korean voters will respond to this rather unusual campaign choice, but it’s probably safe to assume that the candidate will enjoy at least a small boost in popularity. Recently, we told you that Blizzard made Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War free for everyone, so maybe it’s a good time to download the game and start gathering some minerals.

Wi-Fi and Broadband Access Ranked Most Important in Apartment Renter Survey

According to the most recent survey conducted by research firm Precision Sample, the most important feature an apartment renter looks for is Wi-Fi and broadband Internet access. It is ranked higher than other amenities including in-room laundry washer and dryer machines as well as a furnished kitchen.

Of those surveyed, 34% ranked Wi-Fi access as the most important apartment feature, followed by broadband internet access. In comparison, only 13% of those surveyed prioritized in-room laundry features as the most important. 75% of the property owners said prospective residents asked about the communications services including internet, phone and TV prior to renting. Only 30% believe that an investment in quality communications services boosts property value however.

Unsurprisingly, young people ages 18-34 prefer high-tech amenities than those older than 50. 82% of all those surveyed also said that they install the latest technology in order to future-proof their apartment. 60% plan to make improvements in energy efficiency this year, which includes switching out to LED bulbs as well as implemented automated smart home features.

The survey polled 205 building managers, building owners and real-estate developers of multi-family properties in the United States in December 2016. The research was actually commissioned by ComCast who provides communications service to more than 14.7 million living units in the United States so this data is valuable for their business.

Intel Coffee Lake Specs Revealed?

Following rumours that Intel will be unveiling new processors at this year’s Computex, the specs for the company’s forthcoming Coffee Lake architecture have supposedly leaked. Courtesy of database entries on SiSoftware’s Sandra database, we may now have our first look at the specs for two Coffee Lake CPUs.

The pair of processors detailed on Sandra appear to be one four-core and one six-core CPU.

Six-Core Coffee Lake S:

The six-core chip, which is likely to be of most interest, looks like nothing to shout home about – 3.5GHz base clock, no Turbo boost, and no hyper-threading – though these stats could be referring to a disabled engineering sample, meaning that the retail version could boast a more impressive output. The specs also list 1.5MB of L2 cache (6x256KB) and 9MB of L3 cache.

Four-Core Coffee Lake R:

The four-core processor appears to be an embedded chip with eight threads, a base clock of 1.90GHz, a boost of 2.11GHz, and 8MB of L3 cache.

So, how do we know that the specs for these two chips refer to Coffee Lake processors? As WCCFTech points out, the six-core CPU specs was running on a Kaby Lake-S client platform but does not have the expected Kaby Lake-X codename, which points to a newer codename that is not yet known to us.

Intel is planning to release its 8th Gen Coffee Lake processors earlier than expected – the launch has been pushed forward from January 2018 to the second-half of 2017 – presumably in an effort to stymie AMD’s lauded Ryzen range of CPUs, which launched last month.

It’s been a while since VisionTek released a new graphics card, but now they’re back with two new cards based on AMD’s 500-series GPUs. The two new graphics cards are the VisionTek Radeon RX580 with 8GB memory and the VisionTek Radeon RX570 with 4GB memory.

The VisionTek Radeon RX580 has a standard PCB design but comes with a custom cooler design. Two fans keep the card cool while two 8mm and two 6mm heat pipes to transfer the heat away from the GPU. The design should allow for better cooling, lower noise, and a more stable card when compared to a reference blower cooler.

VisionTek RX580

We can move right along to the second card now that we’re talking blower cooler because that’s what the VisionTek Radeon RX570 features. A standard partner card that looks like any other. The 4GB graphics card is designed for entry level to mid level gaming and it should do a relatively good job at that while staying on a budget.

VisionTek RX570

The VisionTek Radeon RX580 has a base clock of 1257 MHz, a boost clock of 1340 MHz, and it can turbo clock up to 1366 MHz. It features three DisplayPorrt 1.4, one HDMI 2.0b, and one dual-link DVI port. The Radeon RX570 has a base clock of 1168 MHz, a boost clock of 1244 MHz, and it can turbo clock up to 1264 MHz. It doesn’t have a DVI port, but otherwise, it comes with the same connectors as the RX580 card.

The new VisionTek Radeon RX580 Overclocked 8GB card is available for $249.99 while the Radeon RX570 Overclocked 4GB card can be yours for $199.99. Both cards are backed by a two-year warranty.

Zotac is more or less the source from which all mini PCs originate from and as such it’s only logical for the company to refresh their systems with the latest generation processors. The nano series has the smallest systems and it is in that series that Zotac now announced their new Apollo Lake SoC based CI327 mini-PC.

The new Zotac Nano CI327 mini-PC is powered by a Celeron N3450 SoC, built on the 14 nm processes. It features a quad-core Goldmont CPU clocked at 2.20 GHz and with 2 MB of L2 cache as well as an Intel HD 500 graphics based on the Gen 9 LP architecture. That’s plenty of horsepower for a lot of tasks from office work over surfing to media playback and light gaming.

The Zotac Nano CI327 packs a lot of connections and options despite its tiny size with measurements of just 127.8 mm x 126.8 mm x 56.8 mm. Users can install up to 8 GB memory in the two SO-DIMM slots and install a 2.5mm drive with a height up to 9mm.

The system features two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 connection, and a 3-in-1 card reader for SD memory cards. There are three display connectors on the CI327, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2, and a D-Sub VGA connector, allowing connections to any system no matter the age. Headset connections are present too via normal jacks on the front and so is an 802.11ac WLAN and Bluetooth 4.0 combination. The system only features a single antenna connector, so the wireless strength might be limited.

Zotac didn’t reveal any pricing for the Nano CI327 mini-PC at this time, nor did they announce an availability date. But both pieces of information are sure to be revealed shortly.

Storage becomes more of an issue as drones drop in price and more people get access to them. All the footage taken has to be stored somewhere and Seagate officially announced their DJI Fly Drive to do just that. It’s an external drive with 2TB capacity, featuring a MicroSD card slot for footage offloading, USB 3.1 interface, and rugged protection.

The new DJI Fly Drive is the first product to come from Seagate’s partnership with DJI announced back in January. Back then, Senior Vice President of Seagate Consumer Solutions, Tim Bucher, said: “Seagate is honoured to partner with DJI to help UAV users tackle their evolving and unique data needs. Seagate is committed to working together with DJI to evolve UAV workflows so users can focus on what matters most – capturing data in flight to bring new and amazing experiences to the world.”

With a drive like the 2TB DJI Fly Drive, you can store over 60 hours worth of 4K 30FPS footage. That is more than 250 flights worth of content for a drone like the DJI Mavic Pro. You’ll surely run out of battery supplies before you run out of storage with such a drive.

The built-in card reader is UHS-II rated, making sure that offloading files onto the drive or your computer will be as fast as possible. After all, 4K videos do take up quite a bit of space. The USB 3.1 Type-C connector is compatible with both USB and Thunderbolt 3 hosts, making sure that you can attach it no matter your system.

The protective bumper helps the DJI Fly Drive to provide a better shock resistance against inevitables in the field. The bumper also doubles as storage for the included USB 3.1 cable.

The Seagate DJI Fly Drive will be available this summer for an MSRP of $119.99. As added bonus, users get two-month free access to Adobe Premiere Pro CC that normally costs $19.99 per month (based on annual subscription). Two months isn’t much, but definitely a welcome bonus for the drive.
