Microsoft Backtracks on Free Windows 10 Upgrade for Pirates

Contradicting previous reports, Microsoft has confirmed that it will not be offering free Windows 10 upgrades to people using pirated copies of Windows 7 and 8.1. Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating Systems, says that pirates will be offered “very attractive” upgrade options, but that they won’t be getting Windows 10 for free.

“While our free offer to upgrade to Windows 10 will not apply to Non-Genuine Windows devices, and as we’ve always done, we will continue to offer Windows 10 to customers running devices in a Non-Genuine state,” Myerson writes on Microsoft’s Windows Blog. “In addition, in partnership with some of our valued OEM partners, we are planning very attractive Windows 10 upgrade offers for their customers running one of their older devices in a Non-Genuine state.”

“Non-Genuine Windows has a high risk of malware, fraud, public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions,” he added. “Non-Genuine Windows is not supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner.”

Previous reports suggested that Microsoft would offer a rudimentary, stripped-down version of Windows 10 as an upgrade for pirates using eligible previous versions, with the desktop embedded with a watermark. Now we know for sure: if you’re a pirate, you will have to pay.

      FTFY 😉

  • I suggest everyone to go to Linux. Windows will be black out anytime soon. Never buy Windows 8 and 10 because hard to unlock activation. Ignore Windows and Microsoft company would lost money to go toward Linux.

I’m going to move to Linux in between 2018 – 2019 and be happy to forget all problems like virus, malware, etc.

      lol good luck.

      • I agree with you. I would become tired of infect files that mess up my Windows XP due to fake antivirus and fake antispyware that what I download from astatalk website in year 2008 by newbie member. I learn my big mistake lessons.

Hmm, I can’t say that I have gotten viruses for over 5+ years since I “internet-ed” smarter.
I don’t pay for antivirus either!
It really comes down to browsing habits…

i moved to linux for 9 years ago. works perfect, no problems, and my game also works, like world of warcraft. Team fortress 2, Through the woods, and many more games.

      • You means program name is Wine and WMware workstation to play all Windows PC games right? Let me know. If yes, I would move to Linux soon in near future! 😀

just install Wine from the software center. then games like World of warcraft and other games works perfect. World of warcraft even get better FPS than in windows :).
and steam has it’s own linux client for Linux now that works perfect with Ubuntu 15.04 ( not all games is supported, but many new games is released every month 🙂
Have not tried WMware yet, since i can do what i need with Wine installed in Ubuntu 15.04 🙂

          • I’m glad to get your message. I agree with you. Different way that what some games work and sometimes not work. If not work, we would need to use VMware Workstation to install any Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 on Linux without format hard drive, and we love to mess with Windows for fun to test games and programs. You can do it. 😀 Remember Wine and WMware are very important keys to us. Make sure your computer is powerful enough, like Quad core processor (Core i5, i7, etc), 8 GB RAM or more, any middle video card range or above for gaming.

Why are these authors so lazy that they have to rehash old articles that we have all read from a month ago?
