Monster Digital preparing SandForce-based SSDs for the “Le Mans” series

Monster Digital has recently announced its first move into the SSD market with the Le Mans Series, a SandForce driven solid state drive.

Up until now, Monster Digital has been more centred around flash memory card, but it seems that Monster and SDJ Technologies have decided to go ahead and create their own SSD.

Featuring a 2.5″ form factor, the SandForce SF-2200 controller and Toshiba-made synchronous MLC NAND Flash memory paired with a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface will deliver read and write speeds of up to 550 MB/s and 515 MB/s respectively.

A key feature in this new series of SSD is the over provisioning that will be used. The smaller 80GB drive will pack 80% over provisioning while the bigger 400GB will pack 28%. This certainly raises questions about the use of such drives in RAID setups.

Set for a Q1 2012 release, the Le Mans family of SSDs will be available in 80GB, 120GB, 240GB and 400GB capacities. Prices were not announced although more details should be revealed at CES 2012 next month.
