Fermi GF100 gets a name – GTX 480 and GTX 470

If’s official, after speculations on whether Nvidia were actually still alive or whether they just employed someone to spout rumours all over the interweb. They have given us what they like to call a fun fact of the week.

This week’s fun fact is that the names of the first two graphics cards based on the new GF100 GPU will be called the GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470.

What happened to the model numbers after GTX 295? It seems that Nvidia could be giving early indications on how fast this GPU really is, and hence why have skipped a few model numbers to give ATI’s Radeon 5000-series card a wide berth whilst they get ready to take the market by storm.

This was announced on the Nvidia Facebook page, but typically being Nvidia, no specifications, power consumption figures or release dates were announced, but we didn’t expect them to announce that anyway, did we?

Luckily, there is footage available displaying the new Fermi based GF100 at CES which shows you the size of the card, the supposed fact that it has three billion transistors  and that the card can draw up to 300watts using its 6 pin and 8-pin power connectors.

Facebook, being the new outlet for Nvidia, they previously announced the new Anti-Aliasing mode, but it’s unclear on exactly what the sample rate will be, and how it will be achieved.

One thing I’m interested in, and this will serve purpose if the model numbers mean something, but should we be expecting double the performance compared to the 200-series cards? Let’s just hope that it’s not double the price too.
