Inno3D keeps it cool with their passive GeForce GT 240

Nvidia have taken a major back seat lately with all of their time devoted to the long awaited Fermi. They did however, manage to release a couple of cards last year in the GT series. Namely the GeForce GT 240, which was released in November 2009.

The card wasn’t anything spectacular, but it did keep Nvidia’s feet in the water for a brief stint. It was aimed at mainstream users and featured the general array of technologies and specifications at the time of release. Nothing too special at all, especially being an Nvidia based card, that is.

A lot of users were hoping for a passive model, this would surely be a god send for HTPC users everywhere and would open a plethora of possibilities for other vendors . Thankfully, this isn’t up to Nvidia to do, as they wouldn’t even be at the design stage, judging from their work flow as of late in regards to Fermi.

Inno3D have come to the rescue with one of the first passive GeForce GT 240s. The passive version falls under their “EXtreme” range. Sounds simply tantalising.

One picture is floating around the internet, expreview.com have pictured the GeForce GT 240 in all its glory.

Specifications of the card include a GPU operating at 550MHz, 96 stream processors at 1340MHz and the choice of either 512MB or 1GB of memory running at a speed of 3400MHz.

The passive heatsink consists of around 50 aluminium fins, four copper heat pipes and a full copper base for extreme cooling. Sounds perfect in regards to noise and heat dissipation, but judging by the size of the cooler, it may not be the solution that HTPC users were screaming out for.

Connections on the card are nothing out of the ordinary, which include VGA, DVI and HDMI.

No word on availability or pricing as of yet, but this reporter hopes it’s out before Fermi, otherwise it’s going to be a big flop, and a terrible move for the green brigade.
