Microsoft working on an interactive holographic display

Just like in the Star Wars movies, Microsoft is working on a project to create a similar holographic display with interactive functionality. The project is dubbed the Vermeer Interactive Display.

The project basically combines the Kinect motion sensor technology for interaction with a virtual image being projected, described by Microsoft as a “3D volumetric/light field display”.

The image is created by combining optical illusions with technology; creating an image between two facing parabolic mirrors, a colour 3D image is ‘created’ which floats above them.

This is rather complex to explain although this video should help a present a lot better the way it works:

Now, whether this technology could be implemented into the gaming field is unsure, although it certainly would be a great thing. Enlarging it to the costumer level certainly puts a question mark on the subject, and you start to wonder what type of display would you get? Or what graphics power could this require?

As always technology continues on going further, so time will tell how this goes.
