Electric Chair and Vista

Striking Down Microsoft!!

Taming the dragon can be a daunting tasks for people who do not have experience being a knight in shining computer hardware. Although if you know how to flip a switch, then you can install Windows 7 and kill the Vista Dragon for Good. Just like the electric chair, you have the power to do some good in the world and get rid of your old power hungry Operating System: Windows Vista. Now as promised I will of course give the consumer an idea if upgrading can be performed to Windows 7.

Alright, since Windows 7 is based off of Windows Vista but heavily cleaned up, the consumer is given an option to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Sorry XP users, but you waited far too long to switch up operating systems for this to be a possibility. However I really cannot blame you for waiting so long. Vista wasn’t the best of operating systems, but it wasn’t the worst either. We all know Windows ME was the biggest bust ever made by Microsoft.  Even the Grim Reaper stuck his blade into that crap Microsoft called an Operating System.

Fine, I guess I’ve stalled long enough. I bet you all are wondering when I am going to get to, “if your copy of Vista can be upgraded to the copy of Windows 7 you want to purchase?” In the chart below you can see if your copy of Vista is compatible with an Upgrade to Windows 7.

Windows 7 Upgrade Chart

As said before, Windows XP will not be capable of doing an in place upgrade no matter what version you are running. In order to install Windows 7 after Windows XP you must do a clean install. However before you do this make sure you backup your important data as well as make sure you have a copy of any important software, as your data as well as software will be deleted.

Also in the above chart you will notice:

  • Windows Vista Home Basic, can be upgraded to either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Home Premium can be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Business can be upgraded to either Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate
  • And finally, last but not least, Windows Vista Ultimate can be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate

Notes

*Both operating systems must either be 32-bit or 64-bit in order to do an in place upgrade. If one operating system is 32-bit and the other is 64-bit, the upgrade cannot occur and a clean install must take place.

*Whilst some of the operating systems can be upgraded, it is better to start with a clean slate when installing any new Operating System. It is recommended you backup all your data and make sure you have copies of your programs if you do choose to do a clean install, because once again both your data and software will be missing after a clean install.

*Even if doing an in place upgrade make sure to still backup your files and make sure you have copies of your software, as failure to do so could result in missing files or programs not functioning correctly.

*Check that your hardware is compatible with Windows 7 before the switch as some pieces of hardware may not work at first. While rare this is something that could occur as sometimes the Vista drivers will not work.
