According to Nvidia, the PC platform is the perfect gaming machine ever made. According to Matt Wright, consumer sales manager at Nvidia, “The PC platform is far superior to any console when it comes to gaming.” and this isn’t the first time that Nvidia has compared PCs to consoles.

What NVIDIA is trying to achieve is draw users who haven’t yet decided what to buy as a gaming platform. Wright spoke about the company’s plan during an interview at MCV:

“We are proposing small form-factor PCs to be a viable alternative to the next-gen consoles. Enthusiast players want the ultimate games system and that is the PC. We want to make PC gaming as simple as possible and we think that it’s already becoming much more relevant and appealing to casual gamers.”

It seems that NVIDIA has recognized that complexity is a real issue that separates PC and console gaming. Some people prefer a cozy and simple environment for gaming, leading to the Console preference where you just insert the DVD in the console and just play. Whereas the PC is for more enthusiastic users where gaming and hardware preference intersect, giving users a wider approach in customizing the gear and performance to better suit the individual’s gaming needs.

Wright went on to speak about Steam’s influence on the market as well:

“Steam now has more users than Xbox Live. There is a whole new generation who grew up playing on PC with titles like Minecraft or World of Tanks. There’s a huge community who love playing their games on PC.”

Wright is making a comparison here between the generation who grew up with Nintendo and PlayStation and the generation who were drawn to the PC’s gaming approach, with games such as World of Warcraft and World of Tanks. Having all that said, there are still ups and downs when comparing PC to Console.

First of all, the main issue with PC is exclusivity. There are some games you just can’t get on PC. Grand Theft Auto 5 and Dead Rising 3 are some examples, two big titles that can only be played on a console. But when it comes to performance, the consoles are capped at 720p with 30 FPS, whereas PCs are not. Who wouldn’t enjoy a 4K experience with 16x anti-aliasing?

The main point, for PCs at least, is that security measures for games are practically non-existent and all PC games are inevitably being pirated, thus the console exclusivity appearing. NVIDIA has a point here, why restrict gaming on some platforms, especially PC, where consoles can also be modded and users can still play pirated versions on their consoles as well? Gaming enthusiasts should be able to play their favorite games on the best platform ever made, and that is the PC.

In the end, the everyone decides what’s the best option for him or her, whether it’s the console or PC. But having more and more restrictions on PCs will really affect the platform and user choice in terms of gaming, despite what NVIDIA is trying to prove here.

**Translation** We slipped up trying to get our GPU’s into the latest consoles so gamers should buy PC’s with Nvidia graphics instead.
Despite what they’re trying to say here, I’ll take their advice.

  • Misleader

It’ll only be a matter of time before someone makes it possible to play pirated xboner and ps4 games. you shouldn’t make it sound like pirating is mutually exclusive to PC.

    • Dragos Popescu

yep, that’s what I think aswell.
if next-gens are pretty much PC’s with console clothes, it will be a walk in the park for the hackers to break PS4 and Xbone games so we can have them on the PC. and so no one could ever blame PC gamers because they want to play those games without having to buy a toaster of a console.

Consoles are tied to a fixed specification, all consoles are the same, one mans xbox is the same as the next mans, all but the storage, a pc has upgradability, limited in some ways yes, but still upgradable…..you want better graphics? buy a newer card, you want more ram, buy more, you want a faster cpu, buy one, you own a console, you can’t do that………and until console vendors allow that, pc’s will be superior……tho on the flip side of the coin, if you have a console, if a game works on one, it will work on them all, due to the variation in pc specifications, you will always get, oops it don’t work……..rough with the smooth people…………until console vendors get with the program, nothing will change……

“security measures for games are practically non-existent and all PC
games are inevitably being pirated, thus the console exclusivity
appearing.” Who wrote this? What a load of BS .. Some of the cross platform games of the year (BF, CoD and others) were ALL pirated on each and every platform…Xbox piracy has went up almost more than PC piracy … Really wish they would quit blaming piracy for everything … Piracy exists on ALL platforms not just PC .. The real reason PC games don’t seem to get as many big name ‘exclusive titles’ is the more blatant sign of money. Companies will make more doing a console exclusive due to the raging 12yr old console fans who would struggle without their controllers, nothing what so ever to do with piracy. The day a developer can show 100% conclusively that is the only reason for console exclusives then I’ll eat my socks .. Example, Dead Rising 3 is an xbox one exclusive, its not going to be ported to either PS4 or PC … If piracy was the reason to blame on PC then give it to the PS4 .. Although this article had a few good and factual points when it got down to it it blamed the wrong reasons for the smaller things

Oh yeah and as Misleader pointed out it won’t be long until the Xbox One and PS4 is getting pirated versions of games released .. Infact from a few other articles I read, one group has suggested they have more or less done the xbox one already … Guess thats a PCs fault :)

Er, the pair of sentences in the article explain WHY the security measure sentiment is bunk. Keep reading past the part that enraged you. “NVIDIA has a point here, why restrict gaming on some platforms, especially PC, where consoles can also be modded and users can still play pirated versions on their consoles as well? Gaming enthusiasts should be able to play their favorite games on the best platform ever made, and that is the PC.”

When it comes to graphical quality and the ability to upgrade hardware over time is the reason PC gaming is superior to consoles. You can customize your system however you like. Consoles limit you to the same hardware for 8 years at a time.

They would say that because they did not get a piece of the next gen (now current Gen) console war. AMD has got the lot. Wouldn’t trade my nVidia cards any time soon though :-) eyeing up a 780Ti next
