OCZ releases firmware update for Indilinx SSDs

OCZ released the “Arowana Flash Transition Layer (FTL)” firmware back in May 2011 and started shipping Vertex Plus SSDs with the new firmware. However, those who already had drives that would benefit from such new firmware are only going to be getting the update this month. Those with “Barefoot” controlled 34nm SSD drives will benefit from the update, they include “Vertex/Agility/Solid2 drives”made after December 2009 but that doesn’t mean your drive is guaranteed to be eligible for an update, some drives made after December 2009 won’t work with the update (or already have the update) so check this page for more details.

“There are two things to keep in mind before you update. First, the update is destructive, so be sure to back up any data first. Secondly, the Arowana FW adds over-provisioning, so around 7% of capacity will be set aside for performance and longevity purposes after the update. That’s not a bad thing, but you will have a few less GB to play with.”
