Well they kept that one quiet, didn’t they?

The 6990 was yet ANOTHER launch from AMD that had no publicity whatsoever. Cast your mind back to the 6800 and 6950/6970 launches and i bet even then you can’t remember much about them. There’s a very good reason why, and it’s all down to AMD themselves who don’t believe in fancy, extravagant launches but yet prefer to just release a product with no big bang or anything.

We’re still unsure as to why they do this, but i’m sure they have their reasons behind it.

The 5970 has been in the limelight for a long time as it was classed as AMD’s flagship graphics card when it comes to Dual GPU, and with plenty of single based GPU cards being released from both AMD and Nvidia, it was only a matter of time until the new bad boy stepped onto the market, ready to take over.

IMO dual-chip cards are odd and useless. Very much of power wastes, and performance isn't smooth and straight. And even considering the PLX bridge, 2 cards will do more due to higher and sufficient frequencies. P.S.: This card is expensive, and it can afford only rich ppl. Because poor gamers, and ppl who are saving money, will never buy such card due to mad bills for electricity.

I wonder if they'll ever try a new card series? I doubt this card will find many buyers on the market if it costs hundreds.

Andy and I discussed this yesterday as with regards to whether a dual core GPU is really needed right now, BUT if you cast your minds back a few years, back to when the first dual core processors came out… didn't we all say then that there was no real need for them? Well at the time we were kinda right, as there was no software or operating systems that could utilise them to their full potential – this also stands for 64-bit CPUs. Eventually, software and operating systems were designed in such a way that they could get the full use of both cores (and now x-cores) and then 64bit computing became more mainstream. So yes you are right, RIGHT NOW its overkill, but you wait and see, these will start to crop up more and game/ software developers will start to take use of the extra kick that the 6900 and future dual-GPU card have to give. After all if AMD didn't see that there would be a future for multi core cards, then they probably would have thought otherwise about doing it.
