The processor was too unstable at 7.378GHz to conduct a SuperPi 1 million benchmark so the processor was dropped back to 7.155GHz to conduct the test and that resulted in a time of 9.58 seconds to calculate 1 million digits of Pi.

AMD will stop taking orders for CPU’s such as Phenom II X6 1100T/1090T and Phenom II X4 980/975 at the end of the Q4 while it will stop taking orders of the 970/965 and Phenom II X2 560/565 by the end of Q3.

However, the more recently released lower TDP processors such as the X4 905/10e and X2 620e are set to remain shipping until the fourth quarter.

Hopefully AMD will consider lowering their prices of these Processors before they stop shipping them especially as they are now last-generation processors.

It is common knowledge AMD is about to launch the new Bulldozer platform. To make way for these new processors AMD has decided to halt production of Phenom II X6 processors by next year sometime according to this source.

The first processors to face the chop will be the 1055T and 1045T which will be axed sometime in the next few months. The 1065T, 1075T, 1090T and 1100T will all be scrapped sometime in Q1 of 2012. However, there was not much news in the way of the other processors in the range but it is expected the Athlon II’s and Phenom II X4′s will hold on for a lot longer as the demand for them is substantial still.

As i type away on my quad core processor with its eight threads i can somewhat feel that a bit of light word processing isn’t really pushing its power to the max. Obviously when i need its four cores for some video rendering or photo work, it’s ready and waiting. Not everyone needs that amount of computing power though, and it would simply be money wasted.

This is why AMD have continued to keep focus on dual core processors, but have still been squeezing higher clock speeds out and coming up with the the AMD Phenom II X2 555 dual core 3.2GHz AM3 processor that we’re looking at today. Also, did we mention it’s part of the Black Edition range?

Back then, Intel had a large chunk of the consumer pie, but AMD’s move to introduce budget quad cores changed the game. Now, 3 years on, the architecture is dying.

With Intel having reasonably priced quad core SKU’s such as the i5′s that far outperform the Phenom, it’s no wonder why.

Lower TDP, higher performance and a good price are just some of the factors for this, but on an architecture that has its roots in the late 90′s, it has held its ground very well.

Today, AMD release a new SKU for the phenom; The Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition. As their final push, they’ve introduced a 100MHz increase over the 975 counterpart. Both share the same 6MB L3 cache and 125W TDP.

As a final resort to gain some extra market share before the Fusion platform gets a full intodutcion, they have kept pricing equal to the Phenom 975.

AMD’s Phenom’s are now not new news. However, AMD has just announced that it is reducing the prices of its most powerful CPU’s. This is good news for all and will force Intel to keep a close eye on their pricings (although it is not going to directly lead to a price war it will keep the Phenom popular). Of course the Phenom is designed for the gaming enthusiast who has a budget and can’t quite afford the prices of the i7. That was before the price cut and now they are even more affordable.

The 3 quad-core Phenom II models have all had $10 knocked off their thousand-unit prices. This means you can get a 955 (3.2 GHz) for £105, a 965 (3.4 GHz) for £120 and a 970 for £136 (3.5 GHz). These are all Black Edition CPU’s and so have an unlocked multiplier. Please note that the prices a consumer can buy a single unit at will be slightly higher at the most of £115, £125 and £145 respectively. As a comparison the 965 retailed last July at £150 (Modelled with VAT at 20% to match) so it is now effectively £25 cheaper.

Now, these price cuts might not sound that good, but we are saving the best to last. These of course apply to AMD’s most powerful CPU’s the heaxacore Phenom II’s. The 2.8 GHz 1055T (x6) will now retail at £135, the 1090T 3.2 GHz has dropped to just £160 and the best 3.3 GHz 1100T is now at £186. The 1090T and 1100T are also Black Edition chips and all three, as well as the quad-cores; all feature Turbo Core automatic overclocking features, giving you another 10% clock speed at a press of a button.

AMD is trying to stay competitive but it is more than that as they are trying to capitalise on the delays to the Intel’s current Sandy Bridge. The 1055T although it can’t fully compete with Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors does retail for quite a bit less than Intel’s cheapest Sandy Bridge. This makes it hard to ignore.

More good news is that the AMD Phenom prices will continue to drop as the year continues and we get closer to the release of the Bulldozer-based chips.

That’s why we (review sites) encourage a bit of competition, as it means better products come out at a faster pace, to try and be the leader of the pack. This is a prime example between AMD and Intel who have been fighting for the processor crown for as long as i can remember.

We used to see processor launches every so often, but now we are sometimes shown them once a month (not that we’re complaining).

Intel have held back a back with their product focus mainly being on Sandybridge, so instead they had a reshuffle and dropped some product lines and brought the prices down on others to get in line with their competitors; hence we see processors from a year ago drop dramatically in retailers. AMD however, have been releasing more and more CPU’s onto the market, especially with the X6 range of Phenom II’s with the flagship being the 1090T clocked to 3.2GHz and a turbo speed of 3.6GHz all for around the £190 mark.

The next logical step would be to bring out something to succeed the 1090T with a faster clock speed. That’s where the 1100T takes over as AMD’s latest flagship processor.

AMD Phenom II X4 970 needs just a bit more to equalize the Phenom II X4 and Core i5-700 series in rights. Both product lines offer solutions that currently give you most performance for your money. Of the rest, Phenom II X6 1055T may be the least obvious choice. Subjectively, an unlocked Phenom II X6 1075T seems a better variant. Of course, if your tasks are well-parallelized.
