Thecus invited us to the WSS NAS Product Launch in Berlin and we were naturally eager to attend. Thecus introduced us to three new NAS devices based on Windows Server 2012 R2, a world first. There are other Windows-based NAS on the market, but they use Windows Home or 2008 R2.

The new W2000, W4000 and W5000 NAS units all come with Windows software pre-installed and are ready to go right out of the box. The two and four bay models use an integrated 60GB SSD as boot-disk while the W5000 uses a 500GB SSHD from Seagate.

Thecus works closely with partners such as Microsoft, Intel but also Seagate to make sure their NAS devices offer the best experience. The result is three new Windows-based NAS devices that will offer features not found otherwise, with a tiny footprint and great energy-efficiency. The in-house hardware team employed at Thecus is another advantage and it allows for quicker product releases.

The Windows 2012 R2 environment makes the integration into cloud services such as Azure, Office 365 or Remote Desktop connection really easy and with a familiar interface. Aimed at 1 to 50 clients, these new NAS systems have a broad market share and can perform really well with their Intel Atom processors under the hood.

Customers will have access to restore ISO’s that will be available for download in many different languages, to either restore or perform complete fresh installs.

Luke from Thecus also took the time to introduce us to the three new Windows Server 2012 R2 based NAS devices, you can watch the video below:

The three new Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials servers, or WSS NAS for short, weren’t the only thing we saw during this launch event and you can follow the entire coverage below.

The event started out with a little history, a history of success. Thecus likes being first and they have been over the years with many things, over and over.

Now it’s getting to the interesting part, collaborating Thecus hardware with Windows software.

Thecus doesn’t just make NAS devices for the small businesses and pro-consumers, they also create great rack-units.

The three musketeers.

Working closely with Intel allows Thecus to deliver the best results to their customers.

Speed and capacity are key in storage and Intel has pretty much all areas covered.

A look at the specifications, I do however believe they accidently switched the CPU in the chart between the 2 and 5 bay models.

Seagate is another close partner of Thecus’ and they make some of the best NAS drives on the market. With an ever growing data consumption and smart devices, we need to keep up with the storage demands.

Statistics show that a lot of NAS area is unused and could be optimized.

Seagate also offers their NAS drives with +Rescue Data Recovery service.
