Toshiba present their new 2.5″ HDD with 15,000 RPM spindle speed

Toshiba has recently introduced an update to their high performance enterprise-class drives with their latest MK01GRRB/R series.

This new HDD has a maxed capacity of 300GB in a 2.5” format with a rotational speed of 15,000 RPM delivered through a SAS interface of 6Gbps.

Other features incorporated by Toshiba include enhanced power condition state that reduces drive spin in idle states therefore lowering power consumption. This means less heat and less power consumed overall meaning a real cash saver for the enterprises.

Another feature is the self-encryption technology designed to the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) “Enterprise SSC” specifications, meaning the tranquillity and the peace of mind of the business owners.

“SED technology provides simple and complete data security throughout the drive’s usable life cycle – with no performance impact – and enables organizations to crypto-graphically erase protected data securely, enabling the ability to return, service, repurpose, or retire drives without lengthy data overwrite operations or physical destruction of the drive,” Toshiba said.

This new series will come out in Q1 2012 with a total of four models proposed: the 300 GB MK3001GRRB without encryption and the MK3001GRRR with encryption, and the 147 GB MK1401GRRB without encryption and MK1401GRRR with encryption.

The average seek time of the drives are of 2.7 ms in read and 3.0 ms in write. The power consumption will be of 4.5 watts for the 300GB while the 147GB will consume 4.3 watts.

“Toshiba small form factor enterprise drives deliver the performance, capacity and security features IT administrators require for today’s mission critical server, storage and cloud appliance markets,” Toshiba said.
