Western Digital introduce 2TB 2.5″ hard drive

Currently the only large capacity and widely available 2.5″ drives available on the market are 1.5TB hard drives. Now Western Digital is looking to move things forward by offering 2TB hard drives in the 2.5″ form factor.

Under the “WD Green” branding, Western Digital’s lowest performance series, the new WD20NPVT drive brings to the table a varying spindle speed of between 4500-5400 RPMs. This ensures that power consumption is lower (as the Green name suggests), but as a result makes performance lower too.

The hard drive packs the SATA II 3Gb/s interface, not really a problem since no current mechanical hard drive on the market ever comes close to saturating the SATA II bandwidth – it also allows WD to keep the price down a bit lower.

8MB of cache, a 12ms response time and the Western Digital Intellipower top off the rest off the features. Power consumption figures are 0.2W idle (parked) and 1.7W (active) making it ideal for laptops and notebooks. Although the 15mm thickness means a lot of smaller notebooks may struggle to fit this drive in – considering the new Ultrabooks only fit 7mm 2.5″ drives.

Currently these drives retail at $240/£180 with a 2 year warranty.
