28nm GT 640M gets benchmarked

Nvidia’s 28nm developments will be arriving on the notebook soon as well as for the desktop. The GT 640M is going to be a brand new 28nm notebook GPU, coming in as a Direct X 11.1 replacement for the older Direct X 11 GT 540.  The GT 640M was tested inside an Acer Aspire M3 notebook which is equipped with an Ivy Bridge quad core mobile processor. The 3D Mark 06 and 11 benchmarks were used for the synthetic side whilst for games Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Batman: Arkham City were all used at 1366 by 768. It is fair to say that the GT 640M represents a significant performance leap over its 5 series equivalent the GT 540M.

The 3D Mark 06 score leaves it significantly behind the GT 555M. However, comparing the score with that of a GT 540M which scores on average 8141 in 3D Mark 06, then the 9591 looks like quite an impressive gain for the GT 640M. 3D Mark 11 offers a different picture, we can see that the GT 640M is more optimised for Direct X 11 than its more powerful 5 series GT 555M counterpart. Comparing with its direct 5 series equivalent and we can see a gain from 992 (GT 540M) to 1785 (GT 640M). The Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Batman and Deus Ex results all show good playable frame rates when using high details at the 1366 by 768 resolution.
