80-90% of Video Game Code is Now Written with AI, Says Level-5 CEO
Akihiro Hino, CEO and president of Level-5, recently discussed the growing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in video game development. He suggested that today, about 80-90% of the code for video games is written using AI. He shared these thoughts while welcoming new students to the Top Game Creators Academy (TGCA), a program supported by the CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association) and the Japanese government to train new game developers. It’s worth noting that Hino is also the president of TGCA.
AI Will Lead, Humans Must Follow
In his speech, Hino emphasized that the rise of generative AI will make it essential for game developers to develop a strong sense of aesthetics. This skill will be crucial for standing out in the global market.
Through this program, Hino hopes many of the students will shine on the global stage as video game developers. Even as he continues his own work as a developer, he has recently realized that AI is taking over the creative world.
Currently, about 80-90% of the code in games is written by AI, and then human programmers correct and finalize it. This means that, right now, AI is responsible for the majority of game creation. But this doesn’t stop at programming. AI is also invading the worlds of art, music, and even game design. It is becoming common in creative fields to use AI to boost work efficiency. That’s why Hino believes the sense of aesthetics will become a necessary skill for game developers.
Hino also pointed out that regardless of whether something is created by humans or AI, it’s important to know the difference between good and bad and only select the best elements to include in their work. He added that in order to become the best in the industry, emerging video game developers must be fully skilled in using AI tools and use their sense of aesthetics to further refine their work.
