A Decade Later, the Nintendo 3DS Is Worth Almost as Much as a Switch 2

A Decade Later, the Nintendo 3DS Is Worth Almost as Much as a Switch 2

In an unexpected turn for the gaming market, the Nintendo 3DS — a console now more than a decade old — is experiencing a dramatic price surge.

Recent data shows that prices for this classic Nintendo handheld have jumped by as much as 76%, with some second-hand listings now matching the cost of a brand-new Nintendo Switch 2.

Currently, platforms like eBay show Nintendo 3DS XL models selling for between $200 and $350. This is significantly higher than the original launch price and about 3.5 times what they sold for just a year ago when used units could still be found for around $100.

Why Are 3DS Prices Rising So Fast?

Although Nintendo ended production of the 3DS family in 2020, the final closure of the eShop in 2023 and the shutdown of online services in 2024 seem to have triggered a strong wave of nostalgia.

Now officially considered a vintage console, collectors are rushing to buy well-preserved units before they vanish completely from the market.

The 3DS also benefits from its timeless game library, featuring classics like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Fire Emblem: Awakening. These titles offer unique gameplay experiences that are difficult to replicate on newer systems.

In addition, the 3DS has a strong following among the modding community due to how easy it is to install custom firmware — another factor keeping demand high.

What was once a forgotten handheld gathering dust has now become a luxury collectible. While the Nintendo Switch 2 dominates the current gaming landscape, many players seem willing to pay a premium for a piece of Nintendo’s history.

The 3DS, once considered outdated, now stands as a nostalgic icon — proof that even in the ever-evolving world of gaming, the classics never truly die.
