A User Flew From the UK to the US to Buy Hard Drives and Still Saved Nearly $2,000
We often talk about how memory prices are rising to levels that are hard for regular consumers to afford. However, storage is slowly following the same path. In fact, hard drive prices have increased so much that a British consumer decided to travel to the United States to buy them — and even after paying for flights, he still saved a significant amount of money.
Flying to the US to Save on Hard Drives
On Reddit, user cgtechuk shared a story that many would find hard to believe. In recent weeks, the price of high-capacity hard drives in the United Kingdom has become extremely expensive. This pushed him to make a bold decision: fly to the United States and buy them there. In the end, the plan worked out very well.
As explained in his post, the user bought 10 hard drives with 28 TB of capacity each. It was not as simple as expected, since American retailers have limited purchases of this type of product to a maximum of five units per person. This forced him to visit two different retailers, although he did not face major problems.
Since he wanted to make sure there were no issues and that the capacity was correct, he checked the drives at his hotel. After buying the 10 units and writing down the serial numbers in the stores, he used diagnostic tools and file copies to verify their capacity.
Regarding the total cost, the user said he paid 244 pounds for each one plus 20% import VAT. To understand how much he was saving, he compared the price of the same hard drive at the same retailer in the UK, where it was selling for 568 pounds.
After doing the math, the user stated that even including the flight and hotel, he managed to save nearly $2,000 on the purchase of these hard drives.
