Although Microsoft is trying to regain the community’s trust, its latest update includes some annoying bugs. The patch is identified by the code KB5120998. It was released with improvements such as a movable taskbar, a resizable Start menu, and a simplified search tool. However, several reports in the Feedback Hub point to problems with mouse and desktop customization.
The most common issue causes the mouse pointer to replace the selected design with a large white cursor in an old-style design. Affected users say that the interface does not allow them to restore the usual appearance or apply other system schemes. The accessibility options for changing the pointer also have no effect while the patch remains installed.

On the other hand, some users have experienced the sudden disappearance of their wallpaper, which is replaced by a plain black background. In these cases, after manually setting the desktop image again, the system restores the black background every time the computer is restarted or the user signs out. Among the additional issues found by the community after installing the update are blurry or pixelated text when running the ClearType tool, as well as the 0x800f0915 repair error in the DISM command. The latter is linked to the lack of valid repair sources in the system.
Microsoft software engineer Jen Gentleman has reminded users that the KB5120998 package is optional. Users who have experienced problems can roll back the installation.
According to reports, removing the patch immediately fixes the cursor and desktop wallpaper problems. Microsoft has confirmed that it has received the reports through the Feedback Hub. Permanent fixes for these problems will be included in the mandatory Patch Tuesday update scheduled for September 8, 2026, when it will be much safer to install the update.
