Active Media Products (AMP) have launched its SaberTooth M1 mSATA drives for notebook upgrades. The drives aren’t blisteringly fast in fact they offer only read speeds of 160mb/s and write speeds of 80mb/s but they are fully compliant with the JEDEC MO-300B mSATA specification so will appeal to a lot of laptop, motherboard and NAS vendors for their uniquely small size.
The tiny drives measure just 51 x 30 mm and run on the SATA II interface. They require no additional power other than that given through the mSATA port (which is a modified PCI-E lane and therefore provides enough power). The controller used is the JMF605 and the flash used is standard NAND flash memory chips. The drives will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities and cost $75, $90 and $190 respectively. These drives are available from Amazon and you can also get more information from the product page.
