Eric Covington, a game designer at Activision Blizzard has revealed that after 9 years at the company, he has been let go over lines for a character that made fun of corporate greed.
Covington had recently wrote some jokes for the lines of a loot goblin in World of Warcraft these jokes mostly made fun of corporate greed, something which Activision Blizzard is known for. Some of the lines included “Let’s call this a cost-of-living adjustment”, “Time to go back to the office” and “Looks like another yacht for me!”. Covington claims these jokes were not targeted at anyone but some higher up clearly saw a reflection in themselves. Initially, these lines were promoted on the game’s social media pages and even after Covington was fired until they were removed after he pointed out the hypocrisy. The termination documents were obtained by Gizmodo which stated that he was being terminated “as a result of your misconduct and harm to the Company by inserting inappropriate non-game related content into a game, which is also a violation of the Company’s Code of Conduct.
It seems Covington struck a nerve and hit Activision Blizzard right where it hurts and getting them to indirectly admit that they are a scummy company. Just pile this on top of the sexual harassment allegations and various other workplace harassment claims.
