Albert Penello, Beloved Xbox Marketing Veteran, Dies After Battle with Cancer
Albert Penello, former head of Xbox marketing, passed away on December 31 after battling cancer. The news was shared by his long-time colleague at Microsoft, Mike Ybarra, who posted a heartfelt message remembering Albert and his remarkable contribution to the gaming world.
“I found out today that Albert Penello passed away from cancer,” Ybarra wrote. “Incredibly sad to hear this. Albert was a long time Xbox employee and gaming fan. I spoke to Albert about a month ago, checking in to see how he was. His spirits were high, his attitude was remarkable given the situation. I will remember Albert as a kind person, sharing, and having an incredible passion for the hobby we all love…. gaming.”
Ybarra went on to add, “His energy and commitment were second to none. His impact on Xbox was noteworthy. Always debating for the right answer and striving to keep players first. I pray for his wife and 12 year old daughter during this difficult time. RIP Albert – and thanks for everything you did for your family, friends, and gaming.”
A Lifelong Passion for Games and Creativity
Albert Penello left Microsoft in 2018 after eighteen years of service to pursue other passions, including his love for collectible toys. Those who followed him on social media will remember his posts about his creative projects and crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter.
One of these projects, in particular, was nearing completion and has now been dedicated to him — a transformable robot toy inspired by Godmars and Mighty Orbots. A recent photo showed Penello beside a prototype of the toy, visibly thinner but still smiling with pride and enthusiasm.
Albert Penello will be remembered as much more than a marketing executive. He was a true visionary who helped shape Xbox’s identity and connect the brand to millions of gamers around the world. His love for games, creativity, and community will continue to inspire both colleagues and fans.
May his legacy live on through the joy and connection he helped create in the gaming world.
