AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.2.2 PUBG

AMD Follows Up 18.2.1 With 18.2.2 Within Two Weeks

AMD has been crazy with their driver updates recently. Earlier in the month, AMD released 18.2.1 Beta followed shortly by an Official release. Basically a week after, AMD is releasing a new driver with further upgrades and improvements. Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.2.2 offers improved support for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The new driver also adds support for the new Raven Ridge desktop APUs.

First up, performance in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is improved by 3-4%. With RX Vega 56 at 2560x1440p, performance is up 3% while the RX 580 at 1920x1080p is 4% faster. Fornite posts good numbers as well at 3% and 6% for the same setup respectively. Finally, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sees the biggest performance boost at 5% and 7% respectively for the same setup.  Kingdom Come: Deliverance results are relative to 18.2.1 while Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds results are from 17.12.1.

Radeon Software 18.2.2 Brings No Mentioned Bug Fixes

Interestingly enough, AMD is not releasing any other bug fixes. The whole driver aims to improve performance and nothing else. Of course, the driver is also the first one after Raven Ridge desktop APUs launched. With no bug fixes, the known issues still remain the same. This means there are still a lot of bugs for AMD to work on, some more serious than others. I don’t expect any more releases until March unless something major crops up.

Finally, the test notes shed some interesting light on AMD’s choices. The test system used the Intel i7 7700 CPU running at 4.2 GHz. This is an interesting choice as AMD already has competitive Zen CPUs. This suggests that at least for the Radeon Technologies Group side, the Intel systems still unleash more of Radeon than Zen would. With the work being done on Zen 2, one day, AMD may use their own CPUs again in their test systems. You can find the full release notes and download links here.
