AMD 28nm notebook GPU in action

AMD have been showing off their 28nm notebook Radeon Mobility series graphic processing unit to the team at Fudzilla. The notebook GPU is running Dirt 3 on an external HD monitor on high settings and it copes with it very well. Given that this is only a notebook GPU that is quite an achievement, AMD is confident that they have an advantage over Nvidia’s 28nm equivalent but that remains to be seen. What is for certain is that AMD’s 28nm Southern Islands notebook graphics is substantially faster than the older 40nm generation. They will also bring much improved 3D gaming support to AMD-based laptops. The card pictured is probably a medium to high end performance card since it needs a fan for cooling and it is unlikely entry level 28nm GPUs would need anything more than passive cooling to remain at safe operating temperatures. Production has been officially announced for 2011 but we do not know at what point  therefore dates on consumer availability are slightly dubious but AMD is optimistic it can have 28nm out a few months ahead of Nvidia so we should expect to see them hit the market either late 2011 or early 2012.
