Ever since the upcoming launch of the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT was confirmed, there were a number of sources who went as far as to claim that this new graphics card would be entirely capable of competing with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. – Now, admittedly, while this was theoretically possible, achieving such a feat did seem more than a little unlikely.
Following a report via WCCFTech, however, benchmarks have leaked online that, if accurate, show the Radeon RX 6950 XT actually beating the Nvidia 3090 Ti in two major benchmarking tests.
Now admittedly, there isn’t much detail posted surrounding the overall methodology of this testing. We don’t, for example, know exactly what 6950 XT was pitted against this unknown 3090 Ti. – For the sake of balance though, this does appear to be a ‘reference vs reference’ comparison which on the whole is probably pretty good as it is, if nothing else, a solid baseline.
In something quite shocking though, when tested in both the 3DMark Time Spy and Fire Strike benchmarks, the AMD 6950 XT beat the Nvidia 3090 Ti. And, it should be noted, by a fairly comfortable margin too!
Personally, while I always suspected that the 6950 XT would compete with the top-tier Nvidia graphics cards, I was looking (or expecting) for it to fall more in line with the standard 3090. – If it is, however, genuinely better than the 3090 Ti, then AMD might have just claimed a monumentally huge scalp here! – Put simply, if these benchmarks are accurate (which we again would state is subject to some doubt), then for the first time ever in their ‘modern’ history, AMD may legitimately have the most potent gaming graphics card available on the market!
With its formal release likely scheduled for May 10th, therefore, rest assured we’ll be ready to test our own samples to confirm and/or deny what could possibly be the most shocking and surprising news of 2022!
