AMD AGESA 1.0.0.7 Update Will Add Raven Ridge Support

Following after the CPU only Ryzen, AMD is set to release their Raven Ridge APUs. The new chips will combine the new Zen CPU architecture with the new Vega GPU architecture into one complete package. Before AMD releases the new chips, they are setting the stage with their motherboards. AMD is providing Raven Ridge support in a beta manner with the upcoming  AGESA 1.0.0.7 update.

As we’ve seen with the somewhat troubled Ryzen launch, AMD’s AGESA motherboard BIOS still needs a lot of work. This gives motherboard vendors more time to iron out bugs before launch. AGESA is essential micro-code that starts the processor during startup. Similar to Intel microcode updates, they control memory and processor compatibility. The various AGESA updates have improved things a lot for Ryzen so far.

AMD AGESA Makes Raven Ridge Support Easier

With AGESA 1.0.0.7, AMD is changing the structure of AGESA. The change will make implementing new CPU support easier in the future. This means support for Raven Ridge APUs, and the 2nd gen Ryzen Pinnacle Ridge CPUs should be easier to implement. At the same time, the change means that many new bugs could have been introduced. This is driving the move for an earlier release. Motherboard vendors can then try out AGESA with the known quantity that is Ryzen.

Hopefully, this will mean a bug-free launch for Raven Ridge. With AMD adding support for the APU, the launch should be coming soon. Some early signs pointed to a launch within the next couple of months. With both Zen and Vega, Raven Ridge should be the ultimate APU. Let’s just hope that it lives up to the high expectations for it. Afterall, it is a culmination of the long process by AMD and ATI to win on both the CPU and GPU side on one chip.
