With all of the excitement around the new AMD Ryzen CPUs, it might be easy to forget that the company is also a GPU graphics company as well. One of their crowning achievements was to bring the APU to market, combining the CPU and GPU together. In light of the success of the Zen architecture, AMD has confirmed Zen based APUs for later this year.
Speaking on reddit, the AMD representative had this to share:
Ryzen is the brand for the “Zen” based client products launching this year. The desktop CPU launching March 2nd, and an APU (or CPU+GPU SoC) including graphics that will be for mobile designs in the second half of the year.
At this point, it is a bit ambiguous if the new APU lineup will share the same Ryzen branding but it most likely won’t. Earlier reports have suggested Summit Ridge as the Zen based replacement for the current Bristol Ridge lineup. The new APUs will feature a Zen based CPU along with Polaris based GPU portion.
While the statement only confirms the mobile side of things, I expect we will see desktop APUs sometime in Q3 or more likely in Q4 as well. Obviously, the mobile market would benefit far more from the efficiency and performance gains and AMD is rightly targeting them first.
