AMD Displays VEGA Demo During New Horizon Event

AMD’s New Horizon event finished a few hours ago and focused on the company’s Zen CPU architecture. That’s not all though because AMD included a demo showing an upcoming VEGA graphics chip running Stars Wars Battlefront: Rogue One. While the specific details remain extremely slim, it seems the graphics card was able to play the game on a native 4K render while achieving a frame rate well above the monitor’s 60Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, it’s unclear how much over the 60 the actual frame rate was and we’ll have to wait for further details in the future. Nevertheless, it’s great to see VEGA being demoed and coping well with the demands of 4K gaming.

During the stream, the gameplay looked perfectly smooth and didn’t exhibit any kind of hitching. This is to be expected given the high frame rate and it’s likely that a FreeSync monitor was used to prevent screen tearing. Presumably, AMD wants to focus on the CPU launch and will outline VEGA’s architecture, performance and line-up during another event, similar to New Horizon. Personally, I think the stream was a success and flowed pretty well. Showcasing VEGA at the end was a nice surprise and provides a taste of what’s to come.

Are you looking forward to VEGA?
