It’s hardly any secret that anyone in the market for a GPU is currently having to spend significantly more than they did this time last year. It seems, however, that AMD might be an unexpected winner in this price hike as reports have found that the AMD GPU market share has increased significantly against Nvidia.
In addition, the current AMD market share is at its highest point in 3 years!
As above, if you are currently looking to upgrade your GPU, the prices as they currently stand are high. We recently did a report which found that the exact same cards from 2017 had increased in value by anything from 25%-40%.
Following a conversation with a colleague, I thought it would check this out again and as before, I’m amazed at the findings.
I bought my Radeon RX480 from a UK based 2nd hand dealer (naming no names). When I bought it in 2016 it cost me £200. Despite it being around 18 months later, I could, if I wished, sell it back to them and they would pay me £180.00 for it!
I think though if we reading between the lines, AMD GPU’s are clearly less expensive than Nvidia and while they may not give the same level of performance, people are turning to team red due to the high prices.
In a report via DSOGaming, AMD’s current market share in GPU’s stands at 33.7%. In Q4 2017 though, this figure has increased by over 6% against Nvidia.
It’s been a long time since AMD held any parity with Nvidia on GPU’s, but AMD does have the highest market share for 3 years. If AMD can exploit the budget market, something they have done to good effect over the last 10 years, then they could finally, get closer to their rival.
What do you think? Do you own an AMD or Nvidia GPU? If you bought recently, did price affect your decision? – Let us know in the comments!
