AMD Readying Low Power Raven Ridge 2000E APUs

AMD Ryzen 2000E Feature 35W TDP

This week, AMD launched their new Raven Ridge lineup of APUs. The new processors combine the best of AMD’s two worlds. We have the superb Zen architecture CPUs paired with the Vega-based iGPU. So far, the desktop lineup consists of the Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G, both 65W variants. To meet low power demands, AMD is working on two 35W APUs for both Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3.

Due to the new AM4 BIOS updates for Raven Ridge, we have more information (since removed) for the new processors. They are the Ryzen 5 2400GE and Ryzen 3 2200GE which come in at 35W. Furthermore, we know that both processors have a 3.2 GHz base clock. This information matches a previous leak which pointed to an Athlon 200GE. That particular chip had 4 cores and 4 threads and Vega 3 iGPU.

Are Ryzen 2000GE and Athlon 200E twins?

For now, we cannot tell if the new Ryzen 2000GE is the same as the Athlon 200GE. However, both chips will fill the same 35W TDP power envelope. Despite the already low 65W, there is a market for even lower power processors in thin clients and all in ones. Another reason could be a cut-down iGPU. Intel sells many processors with just the bare minimum iGPU for home and office work. While the iGPU is a strength of Raven Ridge, AMD also needs cheap APUs to combat low-end Intel chips where graphics power is not important. AMD is weak in this area right now as mainstream Ryzen has no iGPU.

For now, AMD is silent about the planned launch date and any pricing. I would expect the new chips to launch within the next month or so. The first round of chips may be defective and cut down Ryzen 2000G models. As production ramps up, then we may see direct from factory models as AMD leverages their modular design. While the mainstream and high end are important, AMD needs to secure the budget market as well. Raven Ridge will finally allow AMD to do just that. At last, they will have a top to bottom counter against Intel.
