AMD Officially Announces the Ryzen 7 9850X3D; Release Date, Specs, and Price Revealed

AMD has officially unveiled the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, its new Zen 5 desktop processor designed for high-end gaming. First shown at CES 2026, this chip replaces the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as the world’s fastest gaming processor, offering a targeted performance boost while maintaining the same core architecture.

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D keeps the proven configuration of its predecessor with 8 Zen 5 cores and 16 threads. However, it introduces a significant clock speed increase — the boost frequency now reaches 5.6 GHz, which is 400 MHz higher than the 9800X3D. The base frequency remains at 4.7 GHz, while other specifications stay consistent: 96 MB of L3 cache powered by AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache technology and a 120W TDP.

Key Improvements and Gaming Performance Gains

According to AMD, the increased clock speeds deliver noticeable improvements in gaming performance, further strengthening the company’s dominance in the gaming CPU market. The manufacturer claims that the Ryzen 7 9850X3D can offer up to 27% better performance in games compared to Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K, widening the gap between the two competitors.

Another highlight is memory support. Thanks to second-generation 3D V-Cache, users don’t need ultra-high-frequency RAM to get the best results. In AMD’s internal tests across more than 30 games, the frame rate difference between DDR5-4800 and DDR5-6000 memory was less than 1%. This makes the processor particularly attractive for gamers looking to balance performance and cost efficiency.

Release Date and Price Details

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D will be available in stores starting January 29, priced at $499. That’s only $20 more than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which launched in November 2024 for $479. Early leaks had already hinted at a $500 price point, given the lack of direct competition in this segment.
