AMD Quietly Confirms Faster Ryzen 7 9850X3D Processor

The AMD 9800X3D is the current prime for PC gamers and content creators, I should know, I’m rocking one myself! However, it looks like AMD is already prepping an even faster version of its incredibly popular 3D V-Cache processors, following a quiet official website update that confirms the existence of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D CPU. This refined eight-core, 16-thread model is expected to deliver a nice little boost to the already impressive performance of the “Granite Ridge” Ryzen 9000 X3D series, but at its foundation, it looks to be the Ryzen 7 9800 X3D we know and love, but faster!

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D was previously the subject of rumours, but AMD’s own support website placeholder now officially confirms the chip. This suggests the new CPU is well past the initial planning stages and likely heading for an official launch sooner rather than later. With CES 2026 just around the corner, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more at the show!

AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D: What’s New?

The headline feature of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is its noticeably higher clock speed. It retains the same core count and cache configuration as the current top-tier gaming chip, but with a welcome bump in speed.

  • 8 Cores and 16 Threads: Sticking to the popular and powerful 8-core configuration that has made the Ryzen 7 X3D series a gaming favourite.
  • 96 MB of L3 Cache: This substantial cache is, of course, thanks to AMD’s game-boosting 3D V-Cache technology.
  • Up to 5.6 GHz Boost Clock: This is a key improvement, representing a 400 MHz increase over the Ryzen 7 9800X3D model, which shares the same cache and core setup.
  • 120 W Power Envelope (TDP): Maintaining a manageable Thermal Design Power, although the higher clocks will still demand a capable cooler.

The higher clocks are likely achieved by AMD utilising “higher-binned” dies, chips that have shown better electrical characteristics during manufacturing, allowing them to be pushed harder. There may be some minor manufacturing improvements too, but overall, this definitely doesn’t look to be a “new” CPU, but just a more premium quality version of existing hardware.

The Flagship Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Rumour

While this chip is not officially confirmed by AMD at the time of writing, there is also the rumoured Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, which is a more extreme version featuring a 6 cores and 32 threads design. However, it features a unique twist with 3D V-Cache on both chiplets (CCD). This would see the total L3 cache capacity balloon to an enormous 192 MB. The rumored chip is said to operate at a base frequency of 4.30 GHz, boosting up to around 5.6 GHz, but with a significantly higher TDP of approximately 200 W. While this is likely overkill for gamers, it looks set to be an absolute monster for video rendering and content creation.

What We Think

The Ryzen 7 X3D line has certainly become the gold standard for pure gaming performance, and this refreshed 9850X3D looks set to continue that winning streak. By squeezing out an extra 400 MHz on the boost clock, AMD is simply taking the fastest gaming CPU around and making it faster. While it’s unlikely to give you a massive FPS boost, the higher speeds could certainly help with the 1% lows, resulting in a smoother gaming experience.

This move feels like a well-timed pre-emptive strike by AMD to reinforce its dominance in the gaming CPU market, specifically targeting Intel’s upcoming “Arrow Lake Refresh,” scheduled for early 2026, and “Nova Lake,” slated for late 2026. If the 9850X3D can offer even better single-threaded performance without substantially increasing power draw or price, then it’s going to be a slam dunk for AMD.
