AMD RX 490 Leaked by AMD

Now the Polaris 10 launch is behind us, all eyes are on what AMD may launch next. With the RX 480 yesterday, AMD brought some fresh meat for the mainstream GPU market. However, there still remains the question of the top end of the market, those looking for more than just RX 480 performance. According to AMD roadmaps, this is set to be Vega, the successor to Fiji with HBM2. In the first indication of such a card, AMD has accidentally leaked the existence of the RX 490.
According to an AMD document detailing game bundling with their products, the RX 490 will arrive on the market before the end of the year on December 31st. This meshes well with some rumours which have pointed to Vega arriving sometime in October to do battle with the GTX 1080 and rumoured GTX 1080Ti. Vega will feature HBM2 as well with much more bandwidth and memory capacity than Fiji.
The biggest question is what performance range the RX 490 will fall into. There remains the possibility that the RX 490 will be a cut-down version of Vega with performance to match. Given where we see the RX 480, the RX 490 may only be a GTX 1070 competitor, perhaps against the GTX 1080 as well and only utilize GDDR5X. Hopefully, we’ll get more details about the card soon.
