If there is one criticism to be made of the AMD Ryzen platform since it landed in 2017, it’s that it has never been overly friendly when it comes to RAM. And especially so in regards to overclocking profiles. Where Intel is pretty much happy to do anything with anything (specifications/XMP willing, etc.), AMD compatibility is lot trickier and particularly so when it comes to motherboards where limited RAM profiles are available. And no RAM profile within the BIOS usually only leaves users with 2 options. Manual overclocking (where stability can often be a huge problem) or simply running it at the generic speed of 2,400MHz. Hardly ideal if you’ve just spent a good chunk of change on some super-fast memory!
Following a report via TechPowerUp, however, it seems that with Ryzen 7000 set to mark AMD’s debut in DDR5 memory, a key focus of this design is allowing for huge improvements when it comes to overclocking options!
The news is predominantly driven by AMD’s upcoming RAMP (Ryzen Accelerated Memory Profile) technology. A new RAM profiling design that should, at least in theory, make memory overclocking significantly easier than it is today. – In very basic terms, AMD is copying the functionality of Intel’s XMP. The key difference though is that with XMP ageing, and Intel still working on its own updated version, AMD is looking to give theirs a lot of optimisation options!
With this in mind, Joseph Tao, Memory Enabling Manager at AMD, has said that users can expect DDR5 memory to offer clock speeds “you maybe thought couldn’t be possible”.
On a personal level though, while super-fast speeds are nice, more than anything I just hope that AM5 and Ryzen 7000 just make RAM compatibility, and functionality, a lot less stressful. – I’ve had too many battles trying to get RAM on Ryzen 1XXX all the way up to Ryzen 5XXX to run at its reported speeds. Well, not without a BSOD during testing at least!
