AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X Becomes the World’s Fastest CPU in PassMark Test

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X Becomes the World's Fastest CPU in PassMark Test

what should The launch of AMD‘s Threadripper 9000 series (Shimada Peak) is getting closer. As a result, benchmark results for these processors are starting to appear. The Ryzen Threadripper 9980X has broken the PassMark record, making it the fastest CPU in the world in the multi-thread test.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X scored 147,481 in the test (thanks Tom’s Hardware). This score is especially impressive because it places the chip ahead of the Threadripper PRO 7995WX. Although the two processors are from different generations, the 9980X, with 64 cores, has managed to outperform the previous generation’s top model, which has 96 cores.

How Does It Perform in Single-Thread?

PassMark uses several metrics, including workloads designed to stress the number of cores. That makes it unusual for a 64-core CPU to beat a 96-core chip in such benchmarks.

However, the performance drops significantly in single-thread tests. The new processor scores only 4,594, putting it near the bottom in that comparison. This result is not surprising for a Threadripper, as it is designed for professional use and is optimized to make the most of its high core count.

Results Are Promising But Not Final

It’s important to note that these numbers could change when the Threadripper series is officially released. The current results, although impressive, might be from a pre-production unit.

The same applies to other CPUs shown in the rankings. For example, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX only scores 70,438 points.

This top-of-the-line Shimada Peak processor has 96 cores but a lower base clock of 2.5GHz compared to the 9980X, which runs at 3.2GHz. Both chips can boost up to 5.4GHz.

We’ll have to wait for the official release and independent reviews to get a clearer picture of what these processors truly offer beyond synthetic benchmarks.
