AMD Ryzen Threadripper Performance Leaked

After years of slow advances, the CPU wars are finally heating up. Both AMD and Intel are introducing significant updates to their mainstream lineup. The premium HEDT platforms are also getting a good kickstart this year as well. AMD, in particular, is building on their highly successful Ryzen architecture. This summer, AMD will release their new Threadripper HEDT CPUs. Just in time for summer, the first benchmark has leaked.

Threadripper is AMD’s answer to Intel’s dominant HEDT platform. Based off of the new Ryzen architecture, AMD is finally competitive on single threaded performance. The top end model offers 16 cores and 32 threads on the high-end platform. This is the first consumer CPU AMD has made with so many cores and builds on the earlier CCX framework established by mainstream Ryzen.

Threadripper ES Multi-Core Efficiency is Disappointing

In Geekbench 4.1.0, the 1950x scored 4216 points in the single core tests and 24723 points in the multi-core result. The chip is clocked at 3.39 GHz base and likely an unknown boost clock given the high single threaded result. The result was obtained using an ASRock X399 motherboard and unspecified DDR4. Interestingly, the L3 cache numbers don;t appear to be reported properly as they are quite high.

For single threaded performance, there isn’t much of a surprise. The 1950X manages to score just about where regular Ryzen does and as expected against Intel. The real surprise is the low score for multi-core performance, doing no better than 8 core 16 thread Ryzen. This is likely due to optimisation issues for a whole host of different systems, from RAM, cache, Infinity Fabric, motherboard and others. There is also the possibility that SMT was not enabled. Either way, AMD looks like they have a lot of work ahead to improve multi-thread efficiency. With a month or so ahead of them, hopefully, all the issues will be fixed by launch. I for one can’t wait for more cores to make their way to consumers.
