AMD recently introduced new processors for portable gaming consoles at CES, including the AMD Ryzen Z2 Go, a scaled-down version of the Z2 Extreme. A performance comparison shows that the Z2 Go is only about 10% slower than the Z1 Extreme, despite having half the number of cores and using older GPU technology.
Lenovo’s new Legion Go S console features the Z2 Go, designed as a more affordable alternative to its previous, pricier models. The Z2 Go is built on Zen 3 core architecture with RDNA 2 graphics. Comparisons with the ASUS ROG Ally X, which uses the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, tested games like Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, and Ghost of Tsushima. Results showed the Z2 Go performing nearly on par with the Z1 Extreme, despite having four Zen 3 cores (compared to eight Zen 4 cores in the Z1 Extreme) and a maximum clock speed of 4.3 GHz versus 5.1 GHz. Additionally, the Z2 Go uses RDNA 2 graphics, while the Z1 Extreme has RDNA 3-based RX 780M graphics.
These findings suggest that the Lenovo Legion Go S, with its budget-friendly pricing, is a compelling option for gamers. The more powerful Z2 Extreme is expected to surpass the performance of the previous generation significantly.
