AMD switchable graphics to support Intel CPUs

AMD and Nvidia both have their own versions of switchable graphics software, Nvidia’s goes by the label of Optimus.  AMD’s switchable graphics will include the ability to switch between both AMD and Intel CPU graphics when needed. They are giving OEM’s two options with the switchable graphics:

  1. An automatic switching system by which once a demanding application is detected and it is appropriate to use discrete not Integrated graphics then the switch is made, or if the application is fit for the Integrated graphics then that is allocated the task instead of the discrete GPU.
  2. A user determined list by which you can choose which program will run with which set of graphics and for the programs that remained un-assigned the automatic system will allocate the tasks appropriately.
This is a smart decision on behalf of AMD, as it struggles to remain competitive in the processor market this decision makes it increasingly more strong in the GPU market and the AMD/ATi and Intel CPU combination is one that works notably well particularly in notebooks. The upcoming 28nm southern islands mobile GPUs will support this technology.
