AMD has confirmed that it is actively working to bring back older-generation processors, including the Ryzen 5000 series based on the Zen 3 architecture.
This decision, revealed by David McAfee, head of AMD’s Ryzen division, appears to be a direct response to the ongoing price crisis in the RAM market. The high cost of DDR5 memory has made upgrading to the AM5 platform — which supports only DDR5 — much more expensive.
According to McAfee, the “absurd” price of DDR5 memory has made building a modern PC unaffordable for many consumers. Telemetry data from AMD shows that a large portion of users are still running Ryzen 2000 and 3000 series processors. For these users, upgrading to a Zen 3 chip, such as the popular Ryzen 7 5800X3D, could deliver a significant performance boost without requiring a full system rebuild.
AMD’s Plan for the Ryzen 5000 Revival
Originally launched in 2016, the AM4 socket continues to prove its remarkable longevity. Retail partners have reported an increase in “CPU-only” purchases, showing that many gamers prefer to stick with their current AM4 motherboards rather than pay the high costs of switching to AM5 technology.
Even motherboard manufacturers such as Gigabyte have announced new AM4 boards, indicating that there’s still strong demand for the platform. This move highlights how AMD’s long-term support strategy continues to benefit consumers who prioritize affordability and stability over cutting-edge hardware.
Although specific models haven’t been confirmed, AMD’s goal is to reintroduce these Zen 3 processors to the market. It wouldn’t be surprising if the company gives them updated names or slight revisions when they relaunch.
With this strategy, AMD aims to support budget-conscious PC builders and maintain its presence in the mid-range segment — especially while DDR5 prices remain high.
The return of Ryzen 5000 could be the perfect opportunity for users still running older CPUs to upgrade without breaking the bank. AMD has not provided an official release date yet, but the company promises to share more information soon.
