AMD to Release Lower-Performance Versions of Radeon AI Pro 9700 for the Chinese Market
AMD is working on new versions of its Radeon AI Pro 9700 accelerators for the Chinese market. These modified models will have lower performance compared to the original GPUs, which are specifically designed for AI tasks and exceed 1,500 TOPS. The new versions will likely have significantly reduced performance but it is unclear how much of a difference there will be in their specifications.
There is no detailed information yet on the exact changes or the limitations these new versions will have. It could be due to physical changes in the chip, or it could be related to firmware restrictions, which might be easier to reverse.
AMD’s New Radeon AI Pro 9700 Versions for China
The reason behind these adjustments is the restrictions imposed by the US government on chip manufacturers that want to sell advanced AI products in China. These restrictions force companies to release products with reduced performance, meaning that the versions sold in China will not perform the same as those available in the US and other parts of the world.
NVIDIA has already done something similar with their RTX 5090D versions for China, but even these models might not be able to be sold there due to stricter policies. As a result, they may need to create new versions to compete with AMD’s offerings.
