AMD Unleash Rome Epyc CPUs – Taking the Extreme to New Limits

EPYC to ROME

AMD are pushing their new 7nm technology pretty hard on the consumer side, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still advancing their server division either. The AMD Epyc platform is a big hit. Especially so in the datacenter and supercomputer market. However, their ROME CPUs and platforms look set to push that to new levels.

Next-Gen Performance

Lisa Su showed a demonstration where the current Intel Xeon was pretty well thrashed. Although I’m sure Intel will counter the benchmark to some degree, it’s no doubt still a big step up from Epyc either way.

With clients like Microsoft Azure and Amazon to name but a few, it’s a sure-fire win for AMD. Especially now that they’re building the Frontier Exascale supercomputer, which is set to be the worlds fastest using ROME and NAVI products.

What AMD Had to Say

“HB-series VMs on Azure are a game changer for HPC in the cloud. For the first time, HPC customers can scale their MPI workloads to tens of thousands of cores with the agility of the cloud and performance and economics that rival on-premise cluster,” said Navneet Joneja, head of product for Azure Virtual Machines, Microsoft Corp. “We look forward to this new Azure offering doing great things for HPC-driven innovation and productivity.”

We’re said to expect 2X the performance-per-socket, as well as 4x floating performance-per-socket over the last generation. Hardware will be available to customers in Q3 2019.
