AMD Vega 10 Capable of 24 TFlops

For a while now, it seems like AMD have been on their back foot compared to rival NVidia, but now they may be set to turn the tables in 2017 with the revelation that their Vega 10 seems like it will be able to out-perform the P100. NVidia’s P100 is a supercomputer component that is capable of around 21.2 TFlops, while their strongest graphics chip, the GP102 is capable of just 10.97 TFlops by comparison. Thus, going by the numbers, AMD’s Vega 10, with an impressive 24 TFlops will be able to significantly outdo the latest Titan X.

According to Fudzilla, we can expect that the Vega 10 will be capable of as much as 24 TFlops of half-precision performance and 12 TFlops of single-precision performance. This puts it just above NVidia’s highest rated Tesla chip, the Pascal P100 in both half-precision and single-precision computing power.

With Vega 10 also set to make use of HBM 2 memory, the main source of its delays, cards based on it should be quite impressive. Even the mighty Titan X only uses GDDR5X and a P102 chip by comparison, which packs 12.5 billion transistors compared to the 15.3 billion of the full P100.

With all of these specs on paper, Vega is clearly lined up to be a major game changer for AMD and may force NVidia’s hand in releasing a successor to the current Titan X including support for HBM 2 memory in order to compete with Vega offerings should Volta not be ready for launch in time. AMD are definitely back out in force and their future plans also make it clear that they are here to stay, with Vega 10 hopefully releasing in the near future and the company detailing their plans for a Vega 20 in the future and the ‘Navi’ architecture on the distant horizon.
