Statistics from ABI Research suggest that Android tablets have overtaken the iPad for the first time. Apparently Android tablets overtook the sales numbers for the iPad in the second quarter of this year though revenue was still equally divided thanks to Apple’s inflated pricing strategies.
Despite the Android tablet market being fragmented between a range of tablet vendors like ASUS, Samsung, Amazon and Chinese White-Box vendors, Android tablets in general seem to have caught the attention of consumers more broadly. The rise of Android and decline of iPad in the tablet space, which we should note is a very slow shift towards Android, is mainly due to the much lower overall selling prices of Android tablets as well as the fact Android tablets come in a much broader range of sizes including the popular 7 inch form factor. The Nexus 7, pictured above, has been a big hit in the Android market while Apple’s iPad Mini now apparently accounts for 60% of their tablet sales as consumers look towards smaller form factor tablets.
With a new iPad refresh expected next month Apple will now doubt retake the tablet crown for Q4 of 2013 as Apple fans rush to buy the latest incarnation of the iPad.
