AOC G2460PQU 24″ 144Hz WLED Gaming Monitor Review

Final Thoughts

Monitors inevitably are one of those products that have varying impressions on different users, making them very subjective – much like keyboards and mice. Every user has a slightly different setup and what it whittles down to is personal preference. Naturally everyone wants the right tool for the job and as I mentioned right back at the start of this review, there are not that many ‘gaming’ monitors around when we take into account just how many different panels there are on the market today.

The question is therefore, what makes the G2460PQU a ‘gaming’ panel in particular? Over the other screens in their range, AOC developed this particular product in collaboration with those who know what their after – professional gamers. Taking the recommendations of the professional players from Team Infused, AOC developed the panel to give them exactly what they are after. Following months of development, the resulting item is a panel that is designed for gamers – by gamers, thus making it a gaming panel in its own right.

Looking over the specifications of the G2460PQU, there are a number of highlights that do stand out to me and consequently give this a better appeal to me as I’m in the line for a new pair of screens myself and naturally I want to get the best I can for my money. One of the specifications that is a welcome sight is the inclusion of a DisplayPort. Given the amount of time that DisplayPort has been around for now, its surprising to see that the number of mid-range panel that support this input are still a little sparse. Granted HDMI and even DVI are more common in appearance on systems and laptops for example, but for some people, having the best input possible is a feature that they look for giving this panel a huge selling point over others in the same price range.

The other thing that I love about this panel is the super high refresh rate of 144Hz. Most panels run at a refresh rate of 50-60Hz, which translated into fps, realistically means that they can only display 50-60fps irrespective of the fps that the connected GPU is putting out. For a gamer, this is a major problem as in the split second between when two frames are displayed on a typical 50-60Hz screen something can happen that in some cases could affect the outcome of a tournament final for example. The 144Hz refresh rate therefore is consequently going to be far more beneficial to a gamer as the screen is able to process up to 144 frames per second, giving not only a smoother appearance during game play, but also that chance to get that crucial game winning kill.

Putting the technical details aside and looking at the rest of the screen, the brushed effect finish gives a bit of style to the plastic bezel and along with the simple height adjustment on the rear we are left with a product that overall is simple and to the point. Granted its not going to win aesthetic design of the year, but gamers don’t care about this – they want features. The last bit I have to point out is the addition of a USB power boosted port on the right hand edge. Whilst the G2460PQU has four USB ports on it, the power boosted port stands out as an item that many users will find ideal for charging their phones or MP3 players from due to its fast charge capability.

When it boils down to the overall cost for the package, many hardcore gamers may overlook this fact as they strive to get the best they can, no matter what the cost; but for many potential buyers, this can be the crunch point which will either make or break the sale. In the case of the G2460PQU, the remarkable price of around £240 to me makes it remarkably good value for money as a gaming panel. I do wish however that the colour vibrancy was a bit better out of the box and perhaps this is something that AOC could attend to looking possibly towards a V2 model.

Overall I’ve got to say that this is a great screen with all the features that I could ask for. Granted the colour is not as great as I’d want out of the box, but I’m sure with some fine adjustments through the OSD and some system adjusted colour settings, this could be amended to bring the picture back to life. As a person myself who is in the line for a new screen, the G2460PQU is now on the short-list for me and for the gamer, this is a must have panel.

Pros:

  • Super fast 144Hz refresh rate
  • Designed in collaboration with gamers
  • DisplayPort input
  • Well known brand
  • Good value for money

Cons:

  • Colours don’t seem to pop out of the screen

“As a gaming panel, being designed in collaboration with professional gamers gives the G2460PQU from AOC the leading edge with a stack of features and a high performance 144Hz refresh rate that will leave the competition standing in awe”
