Apple‘s custom silicon development is advancing rapidly. Apple’s chip supplier, TSMC, is progressing well with its 2nm chip technology. According to BusinessKorea, the 2nm chips will be ready by next year, with full-scale mass production expected in 2025.
TSMC’s Progress on 2nm Chips
TSMC’s Vice President of Process Development, Zhang Xiaogang, confirmed that the 2nm process development is on track. The chips will be produced using Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology, and the current yield has reached 90% of the target. This progress dispels previous rumors about potential delays due to technical challenges.
Apple’s Plans for 2nm Chips
Apple is expected to be the main beneficiary of TSMC’s 2nm chips. The new technology will likely debut in the iPhone 17 lineup and future MacBook Pro models. Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, Jeff Williams, recently visited Taiwan to secure the 2nm chip supply from TSMC.
Performance and Efficiency Improvements
The transition to 2nm technology promises significant performance and efficiency gains. Compared to the current 3nm process used in the A17 Pro chips in the iPhone 15 Pro, the 2nm chips are expected to offer 10-15% better performance and reduce power consumption by up to 30%. This will further enhance the capabilities of Apple devices.
TSMC remains the sole supplier capable of manufacturing 2nm and 3nm chips at the scale and quality Apple demands. The chipmaker plans to expand its production capacity to meet the increasing demand. The future looks promising as Apple and TSMC continue to push the boundaries of silicon technology.
