An Apple spokesperson recently confirmed to the New York Times that some iPhone 5S units have a defective battery design flaw causing problems with the phones. As a result of the defect the phones are taking longer to charge and have reduced battery life compared to a normal iPhone 5S. Apple are offering all customers with defective iPhone 5S batteries a replacement phone to compensate for the problem.

“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life….We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.” Said Apple spokesperson Teresa Brewer.

Apparently the defect is with the way the battery is connected to the phone not with the actual battery itself. There is apparently no danger of these batteries exploding or overheating, the main problem is just poor charging and weak battery life. Apple hasn’t started any recall programs yet so from the statement made by Apple it is expected that they will contact affected customers, customers will not need to contact Apple.
