Apple Launches AirTag 2 With Louder Speaker and Improved Tracking Range
Apple has officially announced an update to its tracking device, introducing the second generation of AirTag. The new AirTag 2 keeps the same design as the original model but features major internal upgrades. With this release, Apple has focused on improving tracking accuracy and sound alerts, two key aspects of everyday use.
The main upgrade comes from the inclusion of Apple’s second-generation ultra-wideband chip. This same chip is found in the iPhone 17 lineup and the latest Apple Watch models. Thanks to it, Precision Finding now works more effectively, allowing users to locate lost items from up to 50% greater distance compared to the first AirTag released in 2021.
Alongside better connectivity, Apple has also improved the audio hardware. The redesigned internal layout makes room for a speaker that is 50% louder. This change makes it easier to find items like keys or wallets when they are hidden under cushions or located in another room, situations where the original AirTag could struggle.
AirTag 2 Adds New Features for Travelers, Without a Price Increase
One of the most useful new features is the ability to use Precision Finding directly from the wrist. Users with an Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or newer models can now see distance and direction guidance on their watch, without needing to use their iPhone.
On the software side, AirTag 2 takes advantage of recent iOS features that allow temporary location sharing with trusted people. Apple highlighted how useful this is for luggage tracking, noting partnerships with more than 50 airlines. These airlines can receive secure links to help locate lost bags, which automatically expire after seven days or once the item is recovered.
The new AirTag keeps the same physical dimensions as the previous model, ensuring compatibility with all existing accessories and keychains. Notably, Apple has not increased the price: it still costs $29 for a single tag or $99 for a pack of four.
