Archaeologist Tracks Jordan Tomb Looting With Custom Drone

An archaeologist, concerned at ancient tombs in Jordan being looted, decided to use a flying drone to track thieves and monitor the entry of stolen relics into the black market.
Chad Hill, an archaeologist from the University of Connecticut, built a custom “septocoptor” to help map more than 10,000 tombs in the Fifa area, near the Dead Sea.
“We can see the change through time, not just of ‘a huge pit has been dug’ but where different stones have moved,” said Hill. “It’s a level of resolution of spatial data collection that’s never really been possible until the last couple of years.”
